Seminars and Lectures | Hong Kong Keeps Vigilant Against Copycats | Summary of Activities from January 1998 to May 1999

SEMINARS AND LECTURES

In the past year, the following seminars and lectures were organized and attended by the Association in conjunction with various private and government bodies.

The seminars Place-choosing Strategy in Inland Investment and the Kaiping Investment Environment were jointly conducted by the Hong Kong Productivity Council and the Kaiping Municipal Government. The Association, among others, attended these as supporting bodies.

Speaking at the seminar, association president Shi Kai Bin pointed out that the number of bankruptcies among small and mid-size companies was expected to lower. He also added that mainland China's joining the WTO would draw in plenty of foreign capital and would increase the mainland's competitiveness against Hong Kong. Yet, the role of Hong Kong business was still important as businessmen here are familiar with the sales culture of the mainland.

The Introduction to Ganawat State of Mexico inspired interest in Mexico investments. A member of the North America Free Trade Agreement, Mexico exports locally-manufactured products to the United States and products may be exempted from customs duties, although subject to local public security.

The Protection of Intellectual Property Rights has been addressed in a series of seminars, including How to Use the Laws of Intellectual Property to Protect Small and Mid-size Enterprises and Take Action to Protect Intellectual Property Rights During the Gift Show.

The violation of such rights has impacted gravely on the Hong Kong toy industry for one, with exports declining at an alarming rate. Copycats continue to imitate newly developed products and sell them at 40 to 50 percent less of the original prices. And although most of these products do not have the International Toy Security Certificate, they monopolize markets in North America, Mexico, Cuba, Southeast Asia and the Far East where the said certificate is not required. Ho Fu On, a chairman of the Association suggested that the safest way for Hong Kong businessmen to deal with the problem was to register the trademark.

The seminar was attended by representatives of the Hong Kong Customs Copyright and Trademark Investigation Bureau, Hong Kong Lawyer Association, Trademarkers Association and the Intellectual Property Rights Team of our Association. More on copyright infringement

The Art of the War by Sunzi and The Practice of Entrepreneuring were jointly conducted by the Hong Kong Science and Engineering University, and sponsored by the Hong Kong Mould Association, Hong Kong Hardware Association, Hong Kong Glorious Sun Group.

The Association co-conducted an Internet seminar on how to compete in the rapidly-developing information market and how to expand markets internationally.

Be Rich in Adversity and Start a Cause in Crisis was another seminar that aimed to inspire companies to rise above the financial turmoil in Hong Kong.
